Cupping is an ancient therapy that can be traced back to Egypt and Asia over 3000 years ago.

In modern times, Cupping therapy is known as a Traditional Chinese Medicine technique for treating a variety of health conditions – predominately pain.

Cupping is much like the inverse of massage – rather than applying pressure to muscles, it uses gentle pressure to pull them upward.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, stationary cups are placed on the skin and left for a period of five to fifteen minutes, and the cups may also be moved over the area to raise “sha”. The color and pattern of the “sha” marks depend on the level of stagnation in the area, and range from a bright red to dark purple, usually lasting 3 days to a week – sometimes longer if the person is very sick or sedentary. If there is no stagnation present, there will be only a pink marking which disappears in a few minutes to a couple of hours. Sites where there is old trauma or injury may require multiple Cupping treatments to remove all stagnation. You will find in follow up treatments the marks will be progressively lighter as the pathogens are systemically removed from the body.

Cupping therapy is the method of using glass or plastic cups to create localized pressure by a vacuum. This draws up the underlying tissues, creating a rush of blood to the area – increasing circulation, facilitating joint mobilization or soft tissue release, and localized healing takes place.

Cupping therapy opens the ‘meridians’ or channels of the body that govern the flow energy to organs and tissue. For example, there are five meridians on the back that, when opened, allow invigorating energy to travel the whole length of the body. Cupping is the best way to open these meridians, and you guessed it…relieve pain.

The goal of Chinese cupping therapy is to move stagnation of blood and chi, disperse internal heat, and other applications based on Traditional Chinese Medicine diagnostic.

Before applying the cup, the therapist will administer oil or lotion to facilitate smooth movement.

The entire back may be treated, including the neck, shoulders, middle and lower back, and sacral area.

Physiological Effects of Cupping:
